Author Mary Buchanan

Mary is a retired educator. She graduated from Florida State University and Nova Southeastern University. She worked at the primary, middle, and high school levels. She served as adjunct faculty at the community college and university levels. Throughout her career, she motivated students to follow their dreams and “Make an A every day!”.

When she retired, she focused on her personal goal of writing. Since she lacked culinary skills, Mary created a cookbook designed for people who don’t know how to cook. Interview Questions

Is there any particular genre that you would like to try to write in but you would use a pen name?

Not really. I have always written romance because I love romance. This last book is a cozy mystery and I discussed it with Lana about if should I change my pen name and she says, “No, you need to leave as you are”. So at this time, no. First of all I’m 75 years old. I don’t have a lot of time. So I gotta get all this love stories out of my head. So probably the answer to that would be, no, probably wouldn’t write any other type.

Has writing and publishing a book changed the way you see yourself?

Definitely, definitely. I’m surprised at some of the ideas that come out of my head. I’m thinking, where did that come from? Here’s an example, I have an interest in street gangs and in a some of these gangs of the 70s. I grew up in the 60s when gangs were prevalent but and now I’m enjoying watching all these documentaries.I think, how do these people live? They still have gangs. I’m watching these documentaries and all of a sudden this love story came in my head. I grabbed a pen started writing. Tor three nights I worked on the synopsis of a future book. I’m thinking days later, when I’ve got my sanity back, why, why would that be of interest to me? But this a beautiful story.
I shared it with my best friend going to lunch and she says, “Oh my gosh Mary, I love that story.”
I said, “Yeah but where did that come from? I mean I don’t know. I just don’t know.”
Sometimes I wonder how I come up with these crazy ideas.I do know this, I am a happier person when I write.
