Author Spotlight: Robin Pullen – Inspiring Young Minds Through Stories, Songs, and Stars
Nassau County, Florida, is home to a creative force whose work shines as brightly as the night sky she so passionately celebrates. Robin Pullen is an accomplished playwright, composer, and children’s author whose imaginative storytelling bridges the worlds of science, art, and history. Her mission is simple yet powerful: to inspire young readers—especially girls—to dream big, explore boldly, and never underestimate their own potential.
Robin’s breakout children’s book, Caro’s Comet, tells the true story of Caroline Herschel, the first woman to discover a comet in the late 1700s. Herschel, just 4’3” tall and initially dismissed by her family and society, went on to become the first woman in England to receive a salary for scientific work and earned the King’s Medal of Science at the age of 98. Pullen brings this story vividly to life through accessible language, whimsical illustrations, and a touch of theatrical flair.
Before becoming a book, Caro’s Comet debuted as a musical at Jacksonville’s MOSH Museum—complete with a singing telescope and a dancing comet. Robin’s background as a playwright allowed her to blend performance and education seamlessly, making astronomy fun and empowering for children. She shares, “I love that we can do whatever we want and that our expectations are unlimited. Like Caroline Herschel, young girls today can reach for the stars—literally.”
A Unique Writing Process
Robin’s creative journey is anything but ordinary. Her writing process often begins with an idea for a play or a musical. From there, she builds characters, songs, and interactive experiences before finally adapting them into books. For Caro’s Comet, the story lived in her head for years before everything aligned—her illustrator friend, a talented seamstress who created a singing Caro doll, and a composer collaborator. “All the people in my life said yes,” she recalls. “They were my motivation. Once they were on board, I couldn’t say no to writing the book.”
Beyond the Stars
Robin isn’t stopping with astronomy. She’s currently working on a new book and play that explore the experiences of a young mom raising a special-needs child—told with humor, honesty, and heart. A proud member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, the Authors Guild, and the Dramatists Guild, she believes strongly in the power of creative communities to support and protect authors’ work.
A North Florida Treasure
As a Nassau County resident, Robin draws inspiration from her community and loves sharing her stories at schools, libraries, and book events across the region. Her blend of STEM education, musical theater, and children’s literature makes her a standout voice in North Florida’s vibrant literary scene.
