Exploring the Heart of Storytelling with Joan T. Warren
We had the pleasure of interviewing the inspiring Joan T. Warren, a retired occupational therapist and former addictions minister turned full-time author. Joan brings her rich life experience into her novels, bridging the gap between heart and healing. Her works, including “The Bent Tree Path: A Secret Trail of Tears”, and “My Road to Recovery: A 12-Week Guided Journal for Inner Healing“, delve into themes of trauma recovery and the transformative power of love.
A Journey Through History and Healing
Joan’s latest novel, “The Bent Tree Path: A Secret Trail of Tears”, is a historical fiction that traces roots back to the Cherokee and the Indian removal. This compelling narrative follows two protagonists, Lena and Becca, as they navigate multigenerational trauma and recovery. Set in different historical contexts, these characters overcome profound personal challenges, such as domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse. Joan’s readers find her characters endearing, making it difficult to part with their stories once the book concludes.
The Research Behind the Stories
Although not a naturally inclined historian, Joan’s passion for humanities and intergenerational traditions fueled her deep dive into Cherokee history and her personal connection to this heritage. Despite challenges in tracing documented lineage, Joan’s research reflects her desire to understand the generational impact of historical trauma. Her firsthand accounts from cherished interactions, like those with Cherokee elders, bring authenticity to her work, further enriched by her experiences during the Vietnam protest era.
On Writing and Literary Success
Joan considers herself an intuitive writer, often putting fingers to keyboard to let the narrative flow. Discovering structured techniques has refined her storytelling, allowing for a more streamlined creation process. For Joan, literary success is more about crafting meaningful works that move hearts and contribute to healthy, loving relationships, rather than solely seeking entertainment or acclaim.
Guiding Others on the Path to Recovery
Beyond novel writing, Joan has crafted a 12-week guided journal aimed at transforming self-perceptions that hinder personal growth. This process draws from her experience in addictions ministry, adapting a curriculum to foster self-worth and mental renewal. Through such resources, Joan hopes to leave a lasting impact not just on individuals but across generations.
Expanding Horizons and Diverse Characters
While Joan’s current focus includes developing characters within specific cultural and historical contexts, she strives for empathy and understanding across various life experiences. Her writing reflects a commitment to inclusivity, especially in addressing the minority narratives within her stories.
A Glimpse Into the Future
With other manuscripts already in progress, Joan anticipates the release of further titles in her Bent Tree Path series and an insightful collection for children. Fulfilling an occupational therapist’s vision, her upcoming works promise to address the needs of diverse families, offering a continuum of resources aimed at educational support.
