Pamela D. Marshall: Alachua County Author & Peace Advocate

5 min read

Some writers arrive at authorship knowing from childhood they were born to write. Pamela D. Marshall took a different—and frankly more interesting—route.

A journalist at heart, a public servant by calling, and a peace ambassador by practice, Pamela didn’t set out to become an author. Writing books found her. And now, with four published titles spanning nonfiction, children’s literature, and memoir, she stands out as one of Alachua County’s most compelling literary voices.

Pamela was recently featured on Jolene’s Book & Writers Talk podcast, where she spoke candidly about forgiveness, storytelling, environmental stewardship, faith, and why finishing the book matters just as much as starting it

From Rural Tennessee to National Impact

Pamela D. Marshall is the 11th of 13 children, raised in rural West Tennessee, where she learned early lessons in resilience, humility, and community—long before she realized other kids didn’t eat molasses and cornbread for supper.

At just 18 years old, she became the youngest television news anchor at WBBJ-TV in Jackson, Tennessee. That was only the beginning of a trailblazing career that includes being:

  • The first woman and first African American Vice President of the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce
  • The first woman and first African American Chief of Staff for the Shelby County Mayor
  • The first woman and first African American Executive Director of the Memphis Area Association of Governments
  • An interview finalist for Under Secretary of USDA Rural Development during the Obama Administration

Today, Pamela lives in Alachua County, Florida, where she serves as Executive Director of At The WELLness Network, Inc., a nonprofit focused on improving the health and wellness of women and children.

Books With a Purpose (and a Heart)

Pamela’s books are deeply connected by one central theme: forgiveness as a pathway to peace—whether you’re five years old or seventy-five.

The Art of Forgiveness by Pamela D Marshall

The Art of Forgiveness: An Expression of Peace

A mindful, reflective guide that explores forgiveness not as a favor to others—but as freedom for yourself. The book is also available in audio format, reflecting Pamela’s belief that people should receive wisdom in the way that best fits their lives.

BJ and the Magestic Forgiveness Tree by Pamela D Marshall

BJ and the Majestic Forgiveness Tree

Pamela’s first children’s book stars her grandson BJ, along with forest friends like Easy Turtle, Peasy Squirrel, and the wise Fest the Cat. Through a magical journey in the Peaceful Grove, young readers learn that forgiveness is not weakness, it’s strength.

The story grew directly from Pamela’s real-life family experiences and her concern for children navigating bullying, big emotions, and environmental responsibility.

BJs Big Mission by Pamela D Marshall

BJs Big Mission: Easy’s Healing (forthcoming children’s title)

Inspired by real environmental challenges, this upcoming book tackles plastic pollution through the eyes of a turtle who mistakes plastic for food. Pamela connects the dots clearly for young readers: what harms animals also harms us.

NEW RELEASE — January 2026

When Zora Spoke I Remembered My Name by Pamela D Marshall

When Zora Spoke, I Remembered My Name (January 23, 2026)

Pamela’s newest book is a spiritually rich memoir and literary reflection, weaving together:

  • Personal narrative
  • Southern storytelling traditions
  • Poetry and prayer
  • The enduring voice of Zora Neale Hurston

Through Zora’s words and legacy, Pamela explores identity, silence, faith, forgiveness, and what it means for women—especially Black women—to reclaim their names, their voices, and their peace.

This is not a fast read. It’s a listening book. One meant to be absorbed slowly, thoughtfully, and honestly.

Writing, Community, and Doing It the Right Way

During her podcast conversation, Pamela offered hard-won wisdom for new writers:

  • Doubt is normal—but it’s not a stop sign
  • Writing communities matter (and save time, money, and heartache)
  • No book is perfect, but it should be as close as humanly possible
  • Finish the book. Carrying unfinished stories is heavier than publishing them

She’s also a strong advocate for supporting fellow writers, something she credits to her experiences at events like the Sunshine State Book Festival, where collaboration led to illustrators, editors, and lasting creative friendships.
