H Steven Robertson – Duval County Writer

4 min read

H Steven Robertson (1944-2008) was a young adult fiction writer, illustrator, and poet. His day job was teacher and coach along with other titles throughout his lifetime. He is one of many Duval county writers (mostly from the beaches area) that High Pitched Hum has re-published their stories in paperback format. Mr. Robertson was Mr. Reynolds’ Illustrator on most of his Jetty Man Series books so there is the main connections between the two. Sadly, almost none of the books on the publisher’s page seems to have been converted over to the ‘forever’ format of eBook. We firmly believe that every published writer should be remembered and publishing all the backlists of North Florida authors who are no longer with us into eBook format will help future generations learn about our great authors.

Brief Bio

Obituary Florida Times Union

H. Steven Robertson was a devoted husband and father. Larger than life, Steve was born in the middle of a hurricane in Tampa, Florida October 18th, 1944. Born in a storm, Steve lived his life as a force of energy that sought to pursue the journey of a renaissance man. Steve attended Newberry College in South Carolina on a full football scholarship. He obtained his Masters of Education at the University of Florida. A longtime resident of Neptune Beach, Steve worked as a public school educator for 37 years. He served as a teacher, coach, media specialist, and assistant principal. His insight and dedication influenced hundreds of students he mentored throughout his life.

Known to many as “Coach,” his leadership garnered many undefeated seasons of football, soccer, track, and softball. An incredibly talented man, he was an established author, poet, and artist. A master of all trades, he was a skilled carpenter, sculptor, chef, gardener, and craftsman. There was nothing he couldn’t design, build, or cultivate. As an expert diver and fisherman, he loved the outdoors and spent his life enamored with nature, possessing compassion for all living creatures. A pillar of the beaches community, he was always the first to offer genuine kindness and a lending hand to anyone who needed it.

Steve passed away peacefully on June 30, 200,8 surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Kathy; daughters, Summer, and Sunny; son-in-law Taylor and extended family. Steve will be greatly missed by his girls, his family, his friends, and the beaches community. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm, Sunday, July 6th at Jarboe Park and followed by a surf-out at the end of Florida Blvd. with a celebration of his life continued at Ragtime Tavern in Atlantic Beach. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Community Hospice for their devotion to families in their time of need.

Sadly, I could not find any other current website or social media pages in remembrance of this terrific writer and illustrator. There are only two pictures that I could find. For those who knew Mr. Robertson, we hope you will share, like, and comment on this featured article. There really isn’t enough information here to do a promo video.
