Brief Biography

Originally I’m from Virginia but I married a north Florida fellow and we’ve been living here for many years. I’m a former librarian and worked with public libraries in Columbia, Suwannee, and neighboring counties. In high school, I developed an interest in writing and editing but these remained a sideline until I left full-time work in 2014. Then freelance editing became my “encore” career.

Services Offered

My services include substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading of fiction and nonfiction. The differences in these levels of editing are explained on my website. The cost of editing depends on what needs to be done. My fee typically ranges between 0.5–1.5 cents per word but for some work, such as checking references or extensive rewriting, I charge by the hour. Many authors prefer a project fee and I can provide a project quotation along with a complimentary sample edit of a brief passage.

Interview Questions

How did you get started in the proofreading/editing business?

When I needed to leave full-time work to care for family members, I decided to turn my interest in editing into a part-time job. I joined professional editing organizations and took their online classes. I told everyone I knew about this new endeavor and took on several volunteer editing jobs to gain experience and build my resume. Clients have also found me through the directories of the professional organizations to which I belong: the Editorial Freelancers Association, ACES–The Society for Editing, and Sisters in Crime.

What do you like most about your business?

The most rewarding aspect of editing, for me, is helping writers communicate their ideas clearly. A side benefit is connecting with new people and learning from their stories.

What do you like least about your business?

I love the editing process and also enjoy having my own business. The level of work ebbs and flows, so it’s frustrating when several requests come at once and I have to turn down a project.

During the last 6 months, what has been your experience with clients: more, less, or about the same amount of work?

The quarantine months of the pandemic seem to have given independent authors—both those who write novels or memoirs and university faculty who write journal articles—a little more time to work.

Do you think about writing your own book and if so what kind of story would you like to tell?

My interest is in helping people communicate. I’ve contributed to several books and have been a regular columnist for multiple publications—but I don’t have a story to tell. My niche is helping others tell their stories.
